Understanding File Types

The 'cut' of a file refers to the pattern of teeth. Single-cut files have parallel rows of teeth at an angle, providing a sharp, shearing action suitable for hardening steel or producing a smooth finish. Double-cut files have teeth arranged in two opposing rows, creating a more aggressive cutting action that removes material quickly. This type is excellent for softer metals like aluminum or brass.

Grit and Coarseness

Files are also categorized by their coarseness, often referred to as grit. Coarse files (bastard cut) remove material rapidly and are used for initial shaping or rough work. Medium-cut files (second cut) offer a balance between material removal and surface finish. Fine-cut files (smooth cut or dead smooth) produce a very smooth surface and are used for finishing and precision work. The choice depends on how much material needs to be removed and the desired final finish.

Handle and Grip

While not part of the file itself, a comfortable and secure handle is crucial for safe and effective use. Many files are sold without handles, requiring a separate purchase. Ensure the tang (the pointed end of the file) fits snugly into the handle. A well-fitting handle prevents slippage and allows for better control, reducing the risk of injury.
