How to Choose the Best Backgammon
Design and Aesthetics
The visual appeal of a backgammon set can greatly enhance the enjoyment of the game. Choose a design that matches your personal style or home decor. Options range from traditional, understated looks to vibrant, modern designs. Pay attention to the color and pattern of the board's interior, the shape and color of the checkers, and the overall craftsmanship.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard size for a backgammon board?
While there isn't one single 'standard,' most tournament-sized boards measure around 15-21 inches in width when open. Smaller sets designed for travel or casual play can be significantly more compact.
Are wooden backgammon sets more durable than plastic ones?
Generally, well-constructed wooden sets tend to be more durable and offer a richer tactile experience. However, high-quality plastic sets can also be very robust and are often lighter and more resistant to warping or cracking.
How important are the dice and doubling cube?
The quality of dice and the doubling cube can impact gameplay. Well-balanced dice ensure fair rolls, and a clear doubling cube is essential for tracking the game's stakes. Many sets include adequate accessories, but enthusiasts may opt for upgrades.
Can I find backgammon sets suitable for outdoor use?
Some sets are designed with more durable materials like sturdy plastics or weather-resistant woods, making them more suitable for occasional outdoor play. However, it's always best to protect any backgammon set from prolonged exposure to moisture and direct sunlight.
What should I look for in a portable backgammon set?
For portability, prioritize a set that folds securely, has a compact design, and includes a reliable latch or carrying case. Ensure the checkers fit snugly within the folded board to prevent them from scattering during transport.
