Types of Bike Lube

Bike lubes generally fall into two main categories: wet and dry. Wet lubes are oil-based and provide excellent lubrication and water resistance, making them ideal for wet, muddy, or humid conditions. However, they can attract more dirt and grime. Dry lubes, on the other hand, are wax or Teflon-based and dry to a waxy film. They are excellent for dry, dusty conditions as they don't attract much dirt, but they offer less protection in wet weather and may need more frequent application.

Consider Your Riding Conditions

The most important factor in choosing a lube is the environment in which you typically ride. For off-road cycling in damp or rainy conditions, a robust wet lube will offer the best protection against the elements and chain wear. If your rides are primarily on paved roads in dry, sunny weather, a dry lube will keep your drivetrain cleaner and running smoothly without attracting excessive dust. Some riders opt for an all-conditions lube, which aims to strike a balance but may not perform as optimally as specialized options in extreme scenarios.

Application and Maintenance

Proper application is key to maximizing the benefits of any bike lube. Always clean your chain thoroughly before applying new lubricant. Apply lube sparingly, one drop per roller is often sufficient, and allow it to penetrate for a few minutes. Then, wipe off any excess with a clean rag. Excess lube on the outside of the chain will only attract dirt. Reapply as needed, typically after every few rides or sooner if you notice increased noise or stiffness in your drivetrain, especially after riding in wet conditions.
