Consider the feel and layout of the keys; they should be comfortable for your hand size. Good intonation (playing in tune) is vital. While all instruments require some adjustment, a well-made clarinet will have better inherent intonation, reducing the need for constant embouchure correction.

Beyond the instrument itself, several accessories are necessary. A good quality mouthpiece can significantly impact your sound.
