Types of Drawing Charcoal

• Compressed Charcoal: This is a mixture of charcoal powder and a binder (like wax or gum), pressed into sticks or pencils. It offers a darker, more intense mark than vine charcoal and is less dusty, though harder to erase.
• Charcoal Pencils: These combine compressed charcoal with a wood casing, similar to graphite pencils. They provide excellent control for detailed work and are less messy than stick charcoals.

Choosing the Right Hardness
