How to Choose the Best Fresh Cut Daisies
Choosing Your Daisies
When selecting fresh cut daisies, consider the following factors to ensure you receive the best quality and longest-lasting blooms:
Variety: Daisies come in various types, each with unique petal shapes, sizes, and colors. Popular choices include the classic Shasta daisy with its large white petals and yellow center, or the Gerbera daisy known for its bold, vibrant colors and larger flower heads. Consider the intended use and aesthetic preference when choosing a variety.
Stem and Leaf Condition: Look for stems that are firm and free of brown spots or wilting. Healthy leaves should be a vibrant green, not yellow or limp. Healthy stems and leaves are indicators of a well-hydrated and fresh cut flower.
Bud Stage: A mix of fully bloomed flowers and developing buds is ideal for longevity. Buds will continue to open over time, extending the enjoyment of the bouquet. Avoid arrangements with only fully open flowers, as they may have a shorter vase life.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I care for fresh cut daisies once I receive them?
Upon arrival, recut the stems at an angle with a sharp knife or shears to improve water absorption. Remove any leaves that will fall below the waterline in the vase to prevent bacterial growth. Display them in a clean vase filled with cool water and a floral preservative.
What is the typical vase life of fresh cut daisies?
With proper care, fresh cut daisies can typically last between 7 to 14 days. Factors like the variety of daisy, the freshness at the time of cutting, and environmental conditions can influence their longevity.
Can I use tap water for my daisies?
While tap water can be used, it's best to use filtered or distilled water if possible, as it may contain fewer minerals that can clog the stems. Always use cool water, as warmer temperatures can accelerate wilting.
How can I keep my daisies looking fresh for longer?
Regularly change the water in the vase every one to two days, and recut the stems each time. Keep the daisies away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and ripening fruit, as these can shorten their vase life.
