How to Choose the Best Fresh Cut Lilies
Lily Variety
Consider the bloom type: Oriental lilies are known for their large, fragrant flowers, while Asiatic lilies offer a wider range of colors and are typically unscented.
Think about the color palette: Lilies come in a spectrum of colors, from pure white and soft pastels to bold reds and oranges. Choose colors that complement your decor or occasion.
Stem Length and Bud Count
For arrangements, longer stems offer more versatility in vase height and design.
Look for stems with a good number of buds, some open and some still closed. This ensures a longer-lasting display as the flowers open sequentially.
Freshness Indicators
Examine the buds: They should be firm and plump, with no signs of yellowing or drying. A few slightly open blooms are acceptable and a good sign of freshness.
Check the leaves: Leaves should be green and firm, not wilted or yellowed. Avoid any signs of browning or spotting.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do fresh cut lilies typically last?
With proper care, fresh cut lilies can last from 7 to 14 days. Changing the water regularly and trimming the stems can help extend their vase life.
How should I prepare lilies for a vase?
Upon receiving your lilies, remove any foliage that will fall below the waterline in the vase. Trim about an inch off the bottom of each stem at an angle using a sharp knife or shears.
Are lilies toxic to pets?
Yes, lilies are highly toxic to cats, and can also cause adverse reactions in dogs and other pets. It's crucial to keep lilies out of reach of animals if you have them in your home.
How can I maximize the fragrance of my lilies?
Oriental lilies are generally the most fragrant. To enhance their scent, place them in a well-ventilated area where the aroma can circulate. Avoid direct sunlight, which can diminish fragrance.
