How to Choose the Best Harps
Types of Harps
Folk Harps: These are generally smaller, lighter, and more portable than pedal harps. They are ideal for beginners and often feature sharping levers for accidentals, offering a good balance of simplicity and versatility.
Pedal Harps: Larger and more complex, pedal harps are the standard for orchestral and classical music. They utilize a system of pedals to change keys and produce a wider range of notes and dynamics.
Material and Construction
The wood used in a harp's construction significantly impacts its tone. Common woods include maple, birch, and mahogany, each offering different tonal qualities.
Pay attention to the soundboard, as its quality and resonance are vital for the instrument's overall sound projection and richness.
String Material
Strings can be made from nylon, gut, or wire. Nylon strings are common on folk harps and produce a bright sound, while gut strings offer a warmer tone. Wire-strung harps, typically found on larger folk or Celtic harps, produce a bright, clear, and resonant sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between a folk harp and a pedal harp?
A folk harp is typically smaller, lighter, and often uses levers for accidentals, making it more accessible for beginners. A pedal harp is larger, more complex, and uses pedals to change keys, which is standard for professional and orchestral settings.
Are sharping levers necessary for beginners?
While not strictly necessary, sharping levers are highly recommended for folk harps. They allow you to play accidentals and modulate keys, greatly expanding the repertoire you can play as you progress.
How does the size of a harp affect its sound?
Larger harps generally have a fuller, richer sound with greater volume and sustain due to their larger soundboards and longer strings. Smaller harps tend to have a brighter, more focused tone.
What maintenance do harps require?
Harps require regular tuning, as their tension can fluctuate with humidity and temperature changes. Depending on the string type, they may also need occasional cleaning or replacement.
