The Best Kids’ Bed Blankets

Understanding Blanket Materials

When choosing a blanket for a child, the material is paramount. Cotton is a popular choice due to its breathability, softness, and hypoallergenic properties, making it suitable for sensitive skin. Fleece, often made from polyester, offers excellent warmth and is lightweight and durable. Bamboo is another excellent option, known for its silky texture, moisture-wicking capabilities, and eco-friendly nature. Wool provides superior warmth but can sometimes be itchy if not lined or made from superfine merino.

Considering Size and Fit

The blanket's size should be appropriate for the bed and the child. For cribs, a tightly woven, breathable blanket that doesn't pose a suffocation risk is essential, adhering to safety guidelines. Toddler beds typically require smaller blankets, while twin or full-sized beds will need larger ones. Ensure the blanket is large enough to tuck in or drape comfortably without being excessively bulky or falling off the edges.

Assessing Warmth and Breathability

Blankets vary in their thermal properties. Consider the climate and the child's individual temperature regulation. Lighter weaves or materials like cotton or bamboo are ideal for warmer months or for children who tend to overheat. Denser materials like thicker fleece or wool blends are better suited for colder climates or children who sleep cold. Look for blankets with good breathability to prevent overheating and ensure comfort throughout the night.

Durability and Ease of Care

Children's items often undergo frequent washing, so durability and ease of care are important factors. Opt for blankets that are machine washable and dryer-safe. Check the care label for specific instructions to maintain the blanket's softness and integrity over time. Materials that resist pilling and fading will ensure the blanket remains a favorite for longer.

Safety Considerations

Always prioritize safety. Avoid blankets with small, detachable embellishments that could be a choking hazard for younger children. Ensure the blanket is not too heavy, especially for infants, to prevent any risk of suffocation. For cribs and bassinets, follow safe sleep guidelines which often recommend against loose bedding.
