How to Choose the Best Kids’ Golf Gear
Safety First
When selecting any children's sports equipment, safety should be the top priority. Ensure that the clubs have smooth finishes with no sharp edges. The overall design of the junior sets should be geared towards preventing injuries. Proper fitting and instruction on how to hold and swing the clubs safely are also important components of a positive introduction to the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age group are junior golf clubs typically designed for?
Junior golf clubs are generally designed for children ranging from 3 to 12 years old. However, the most important factor is the child's height, not just their age. Manufacturers usually provide height recommendations for their different junior club sizes.
How do I know if the clubs are the right length for my child?
The club should allow your child to stand with a slight bend in their knees and their arms hanging naturally. When the club is placed on the ground in front of them, the tip of the clubhead should align roughly with their chest or shoulder. Always refer to the manufacturer's sizing chart based on your child's height for the most accurate guidance.
Should I buy a full set or individual clubs for my child?
For beginners, a junior set is usually the best option as it provides a complete, scaled-down collection of clubs suitable for learning the game. These sets are designed to be forgiving and cover the basic shots needed on the course. Individual clubs can be considered later as a child's skills and confidence grow.
Are junior golf balls different from adult golf balls?
Yes, junior golf balls are often designed to be lighter and softer than standard adult balls. This makes them easier for younger players to hit, promoting longer ball flights and more confidence. They can also be slightly larger, which can be easier to track.
How important is a golf glove for a child?
A golf glove can be beneficial for children, especially those just starting out. It helps to improve their grip on the club, reducing the chance of slipping. Additionally, it can prevent blisters from forming on their hands during practice or play.
