How to Choose the Best Kids’ Shower Curtains
Material Matters
PEVA/EVA: These are vinyl-free plastics, making them a safer, more eco-friendly choice than traditional PVC. They are generally water-resistant, easy to clean, and often mildew-resistant.
Polyester: Fabric curtains, particularly polyester, offer a more decorative look. They are typically machine washable, durable, and can be treated for water and mildew resistance. Some may require a liner for full waterproofing.
Cotton: While offering a natural feel, cotton is less water-resistant and more prone to mildew. It's usually best used with a separate liner and may require more frequent washing.
Size and Fit
Standard shower curtain dimensions are typically 72 inches wide by 72 inches long. Measure your shower or tub area to ensure a proper fit.
A curtain that is too short may allow water to escape, while one that is too long can drag on the floor, potentially becoming a tripping hazard or collecting water.
Design and Theme
The most exciting aspect for kids is the design! Look for curtains featuring their favorite characters, animals, colors, or playful patterns.
Consider designs that are visually stimulating but not overly cluttered, which can help make bath time more engaging.
Ease of Cleaning
Children can be messy, so opt for materials that are easy to wipe down or are machine washable.
Look for features like reinforced buttonholes for durability when hanging and removing the curtain for cleaning.
Safety Features
Ensure the material is non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates, especially for younger children.
Check if the curtain is weighted at the bottom to help it hang straight and stay in place, preventing it from billowing inward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the safest materials for kids' shower curtains?
PEVA and EVA are excellent choices as they are vinyl-free and free from harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates. Fabric options like polyester are also safe, especially when treated for water resistance.
How do I measure for the right size shower curtain?
Measure the width of your shower rod and add a few extra inches for proper coverage, typically around 72 inches wide. Measure the height from the rod to where you want the curtain to end, usually just above the floor or tub edge, with 72 inches being a common length.
Should I use a liner with a fabric shower curtain?
Yes, it is highly recommended to use a waterproof liner with fabric shower curtains. This protects the fabric from water, prevents mildew growth, and makes cleaning easier.
How often should a child's shower curtain be cleaned?
Regular cleaning is advised, ideally weekly or bi-weekly, by wiping down the curtain or spraying with a mild cleaner. Machine washable curtains should be washed according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically every few months.
Are weighted shower curtains better for kids?
Weighted hems can help keep the curtain hanging straight and prevent it from blowing inward during showers. This can make the bathing experience more comfortable for children and help keep water inside the tub.
What kind of designs are popular for kids' bathrooms?
Popular designs often include cartoon characters, animals, space themes, underwater scenes, or bright, cheerful patterns. The best choice depends on your child's personal interests and preferences.
