How to Choose the Best Nursery Bedding
Safety Standards
When choosing nursery bedding, always look for products that meet current safety standards. This includes crib sheets, blankets, and any other fabric items that will come into contact with your baby. Ensure materials are free from harmful chemicals like BPA, phthalates, and lead. Check for certifications from reputable organizations that indicate the product has been tested for safety.
Material Matters
The material of nursery bedding significantly impacts comfort and durability. Cotton is a popular choice due to its breathability and softness, making it ideal for sensitive skin. Organic cotton offers an added benefit of being free from pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Other options like bamboo blends can provide excellent moisture-wicking properties and a silky feel.
What to Include (and Exclude)
Essential nursery bedding includes fitted crib sheets that securely cover the mattress. For younger infants, it's recommended to avoid loose blankets, bumpers, and stuffed animals in the crib to reduce the risk of SIDS. Consider sleep sacks or wearable blankets as a safer alternative to traditional blankets for warmth. Ensure all items are machine washable for easy cleaning.
Durability and Care
Nursery bedding will undergo frequent washing, so opt for high-quality materials and construction that can withstand regular use. Check care labels to ensure the bedding is easy to maintain. Pre-washing new bedding before use is also a good practice to remove any residual chemicals and to pre-shrink the fabric.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the safest types of nursery bedding for newborns?
For newborns, the safest bedding is a tightly fitted crib sheet. It's best to avoid loose blankets, pillows, bumpers, and stuffed animals in the crib to minimize suffocation risks. Wearable blankets or sleep sacks are a safe alternative for keeping infants warm.
How often should nursery bedding be washed?
Nursery bedding should be washed regularly, ideally once a week, or more often if soiled. Babies can be messy, and frequent washing helps maintain a hygienic sleep environment. Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions for the best results.
Are organic cotton crib sheets worth the extra cost?
Organic cotton bedding is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, making it a good choice for babies with sensitive skin. While often more expensive, many parents find the peace of mind and softness justify the investment for their child's comfort.
What size crib mattress does nursery bedding need to fit?
Standard crib mattresses are typically 28 inches by 52 inches and about 4 to 6 inches thick. Ensure that any fitted sheets you purchase are designed to fit these dimensions snugly to prevent them from coming loose.
Can I use regular blankets in the crib for my baby?
For infants under one year old, it is not recommended to use loose blankets in the crib due to safety concerns. Use sleep sacks or wearable blankets instead, which keep babies warm without the risks associated with loose bedding.
