How to Choose the Best Postcards
Intended Use and Design Aesthetics
When selecting postcards, the primary consideration should be their intended application. For decorative purposes, products like the 97 Decor Vintage Travel Decor offer larger 4x6 inch prints designed as a photo collage kit for wall art, which may not be ideal for mailing due to their format and lack of traditional postcard backing. Conversely, if the goal is sending personalized messages, sets like the Gersoniel 60 PCS Vintage Collection Postcard Set provide distinct patterns and sufficient space for writing, often featuring themes such as botanical or retro designs. Blank options, such as those from Utron, are best suited for custom designs, invitations, or situations requiring a clean slate.
Material Quality and Durability
The longevity and feel of a postcard are largely determined by its material quality. Postcards are typically judged by their paper thickness, measured in grams per square meter (GSM). For instance, the Utron 94PCS Blank Postcards are specified at 300 GSM, indicating a robust and durable card that can withstand mailing and handling without easily bending or tearing. In practice, a higher GSM generally translates to a more premium feel and better ink absorption. The Gersoniel vintage postcards also state they are printed on quality card base paper with high resolution, suggesting they are designed to last and maintain their visual appeal over time.
Quantity and Value for Purpose
The number of postcards in a set should align with your project's scale. For extensive mailing lists, thank-you notes, or frequent crafting, a bulk pack like the Utron 94PCS Blank Postcards offers significant value and ensures you have a consistent supply. For collectors or those seeking diverse artistic expressions, sets such as National Parks Postcards, which include 100 unique illustrations, or the Gersoniel set with 60 different patterns, provide variety. Users report that larger, curated collections often represent better per-card value for unique artwork, while blank bulk packs are more economical for utilitarian uses.
Size and Mailing Compatibility
Standard postcard dimensions are crucial if you intend to send them through postal services. Many products, including the Utron Blank Postcards and Whaline Art Print Postcards, adhere to the standard 4x6 inch size, which is widely recognized by postal systems and typically qualifies for postcard-rate postage. However, some decorative sets, like the 97 Decor Vintage Travel Decor, while also 4x6 inches, are explicitly marketed as wall art prints and may lack the designated address and stamp areas of a traditional mail-ready postcard. The Gersoniel postcards, at 93 x 143 mm (approximately 3.6 x 5.6 inches), are described as 'slightly smaller than standard,' which is an important detail for those concerned about specific mailing requirements or preferences.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overlooking Intended Use vs. Actual Functionality
A frequent error is assuming all products labeled 'postcards' are universally suitable for mailing. For example, the 97 Decor Vintage Travel Decor set, while featuring 4x6 inch prints, is explicitly described as 'Travel Posters Wall Art Prints' and a 'Photo Collage Kit.' Users often purchase these expecting mail-ready cards, only to find they lack the traditional postcard backing for addresses and stamps, making them unsuitable for postal services without additional preparation.
Ignoring Paper Thickness (GSM) for Durability
Another common oversight involves not checking the paper's GSM (grams per square meter). Products like the Utron 94PCS Blank Postcards specify a '300 GSM Postcard Paper,' indicating a robust and durable card. In practice, thinner paper can lead to postcards bending or tearing easily during mailing or handling, affecting their longevity and perceived quality. Not all postcard sets disclose their GSM, which can lead to disappointment if a flimsy product is received.
Assuming Universal Design or Theme Appeal
Buyers sometimes overlook the specific design themes, leading to purchases that don't align with their aesthetic preferences or project needs. For instance, the Gersoniel 60 PCS Vintage Collection Postcard Set features 'Retro Style Botanical Butterfly Mushroom Nature' designs, which are distinct from the 'Famous Painting with Black Cat' theme offered by Whaline. Choosing a set based solely on quantity without considering the actual artwork can result in a collection that is not fully utilized or appreciated.
