Understanding Thermal vs. Impact Printing

Receipt printers primarily use two technologies: thermal and impact. Thermal printers are the most common due to their speed, quiet operation, and the need for only one type of consumable (thermal paper). They work by heating specialized paper. Impact printers, also known as dot matrix, use a print head to strike an ink ribbon against the paper, similar to a typewriter. These are more durable for harsh environments and can print on multi-part forms (like carbon copies), but they are slower and noisier.

Connectivity Options

Consider how the printer will connect to your point-of-sale (POS) system. Common connection types include:

• USB: Versatile and widely compatible with most computers and POS terminals.
• Ethernet (LAN): Ideal for network environments, allowing multiple devices to share a single printer.
• Bluetooth: Offers wireless convenience, perfect for mobile POS systems or tablets.
• Serial (RS-232): Less common now but still found in some older or specialized POS setups.

Speed and Print Quality

For busy retail or restaurant environments, printer speed is paramount. Look for models that can print at least 200 mm/second to keep lines moving. Print quality is also important for readability, especially for barcodes or detailed information. Most modern thermal printers offer excellent clarity for standard text and graphics.

Durability and Reliability
