How to Choose the Best Rowing & Crew Shell Covers
Storage vs. Travel Needs
Your primary use case will influence your choice. For long-term storage, a breathable, heavy-duty cover is ideal to protect against environmental factors. If you plan to travel with your shell, a more robust, possibly padded cover or one specifically designed for trailering will offer better protection against bumps and abrasions during transit. Consider the weight and bulk of the cover if portability is a concern.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best material for a rowing shell cover?
Heavy-duty polyester or vinyl are excellent choices due to their durability and resistance to UV rays and water. Breathable materials are also beneficial to prevent moisture buildup and mildew, especially for storage.
How do I ensure the cover fits my shell properly?
Accurately measure your shell's length and beam width. Compare these measurements to the cover's specifications. A snug fit is essential to prevent flapping and ensure complete protection.
Are vented covers better?
Yes, vented covers are often better for long-term storage. The vents help to circulate air, reducing the risk of condensation, moisture buildup, and subsequent mildew or mold formation inside the cover.
What's the difference between a storage cover and a travel cover?
Storage covers focus on protection from the elements and UV rays. Travel covers are typically more robust, sometimes padded, and designed to withstand the rigors of transportation and trailering, often featuring extra tie-down points.
How often should I check my rowing shell cover?
It's a good practice to inspect your cover regularly, especially after severe weather or before long periods of storage. Check for any signs of wear, tears, or loose fastenings to ensure it continues to provide optimal protection.
