How to Choose the Best RV GPS Units
Custom Routing and Vehicle Profiles
For RV travel, generic car navigation systems often fall short, leading to hazardous situations like low bridges or weight-restricted roads. Specialized RV GPS units, such as those from Garmin (e.g., RV 795, RV 1095) or devices like the QEDASS and OHREX navigators, offer custom routing. Users input their RV's specific dimensions and weight, allowing the system to calculate appropriate routes. In practice, this feature is crucial for avoiding costly detours or potential damage. While Garmin units are known for their sophisticated algorithms, other brands like OHREX also provide customizable profiles to ensure safe passage, making this a non-negotiable feature for serious RVers.
Display Size and Clarity
Visibility is paramount when navigating a large vehicle. Screen size significantly impacts how easily drivers can read maps and alerts, particularly in varying light conditions. The Garmin RV 795 features a clear 7-inch display, which many users find sufficient. However, for those desiring maximum visibility, the Garmin RV 1095 steps up with an extra-large 10-inch screen, offering both landscape and portrait viewing options. While other units like the OHREX N700 also come in a 7-inch format, the resolution and brightness can vary, affecting readability during bright daylight or nighttime driving. A larger, high-resolution screen typically translates to less eye strain and quicker route comprehension.
Map Updates and RV-Specific Points of Interest (POIs)
Keeping maps current is essential for accurate navigation. Garmin devices often provide updates through their ecosystem, sometimes requiring separate purchases or subscriptions for advanced features like live traffic and weather. In contrast, brands like QEDASS and OHREX frequently highlight "lifetime free map updates," which can represent significant long-term savings. Beyond basic navigation, RV-specific POIs are invaluable. Garmin units excel here, offering preloaded directories of RV parks and services, Tripadvisor traveler ratings, and content from Ultimate Public Campgrounds. While generic navigators might show gas stations, they often lack the detailed information about dump stations, propane refills, or suitable overnight parking spots that dedicated RV GPS units provide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring Custom Routing Capabilities
A frequent oversight is selecting a GPS unit that lacks true custom routing for RVs. Products like the Garmin RV 795 and RV 1095 explicitly state "custom routing for the size and weight of your RV or trailer." Similarly, QEDASS and OHREX units feature customizable settings for vehicle weight, length, height, and width. Users who opt for generic car GPS systems often find themselves encountering low bridges, weight limits, or sharp turns unsuitable for their rig, leading to stressful and time-consuming reroutes.
Overlooking Map Update Policies
Another common error is not understanding how map updates are handled. While brands like QEDASS and OHREX prominently advertise "Lifetime free map updates," Garmin typically integrates updates through its proprietary system, with some advanced features potentially requiring additional services or subscriptions. Failing to clarify the map update policy can result in outdated navigation, missing new roads or closures, and incurring unexpected costs over the device's lifespan.
Underestimating Screen Size Requirements
For RV drivers, a small screen can significantly impede navigation. Attempting to use a standard 5-inch car GPS in a large RV often proves challenging due to the distance from the driver. The Garmin RV 1095, with its extra-large 10-inch display, addresses this directly, offering enhanced readability. Even the 7-inch units, like the Garmin RV 795 or OHREX N700, provide a substantial improvement over smaller screens, reducing the need to squint or lean forward, which can detract from road focus.
