Understanding Grit Levels

Sander sheets are categorized by grit, which refers to the coarseness of the abrasive particles. Lower grit numbers (e.g., 40-80) are coarse and used for rapid material removal, like stripping paint or shaping wood. Medium grits (e.g., 100-150) are good for smoothing out rough surfaces after coarse sanding. Finer grits (e.g., 180-220) are used for preparing surfaces for finishing, while very fine grits (e.g., 320+) are for polishing and achieving a glass-like smoothness.

Abrasive Material Types

Common abrasive materials include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, and zirconia alumina. Aluminum oxide is a versatile and durable option suitable for most woodworking and general-purpose sanding. Silicon carbide is harder and sharper, making it ideal for hard materials like metal, plastic, and glass, as well as for wet sanding applications. Zirconia alumina is highly durable and self-sharpening, making it excellent for heavy-duty stock removal on wood and metal.

Sheet Backing and Adhesion

Sander sheets come with different backing materials, such as paper, cloth, or film. Paper backing is common and cost-effective, suitable for general use. Cloth backing is more durable and flexible, ideal for contoured surfaces and demanding applications. Film backing offers a uniform surface and consistent results, often used for fine finishing. Adhesion methods include hook-and-loop (velcro) for easy attachment and removal, or pre-attached adhesive for orbital sanders.

Choosing the Right Sheet for Your Project

Consider the material you are working with and the desired outcome. For rough lumber or paint removal, start with a lower grit. For preparing bare wood for stain, a medium to fine grit is appropriate. If you're finishing furniture, you'll likely progress through several grits, ending with a very fine grit. Always sand with the grain of the wood for the best results.
