Frequently Asked Questions
Are all fossils sold online authentic?
While many sellers offer genuine fossils, fakes and replicas do exist. It's important to buy from reputable sources that provide detailed information about the fossil's origin and characteristics.
What is the best way to display fossils?
Display methods vary depending on the fossil. Smaller, robust fossils can be placed in display cases, while larger or more fragile ones might require specialized stands or mounts to prevent damage.
How should I clean a fossil?
Generally, minimal cleaning is best. Use a soft brush to remove loose dust. Avoid water or harsh chemicals unless you are experienced, as improper cleaning can damage the specimen.
What does 'provenance' mean for fossils?
Provenance refers to the documented history of ownership and discovery of a fossil. Knowing where and when a fossil was found helps verify its authenticity and provides valuable context.
Are there specific age recommendations for children?
For younger children, durable and easily identifiable fossils like ammonites or shark teeth are often suitable. Always supervise children when handling delicate specimens.
What makes a fossil valuable?
Value is determined by rarity, completeness, preservation quality, size, and the detail of the specimen. Fossils that are exceptionally well-preserved or represent rare species tend to be more valuable.
