How to Choose the Best Table Runners
Style and Occasion
Table runners come in a vast array of colors, patterns, and embellishments to suit any occasion. For daily use, neutral tones or subtle patterns work well. Holiday events might call for festive colors, seasonal motifs, or runners with intricate embroidery. Think about your existing decor – a runner with a bold geometric print can be a focal point, while a solid, textured runner can provide a subtle backdrop. Layering runners can also add depth and visual interest, especially for special events.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean a table runner?
Cleaning instructions vary by material. Cotton and linen runners can often be machine washed on a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. For delicate fabrics or those with embellishments, spot cleaning or hand washing is recommended. Always check the manufacturer's care label for specific guidance.
What is the standard length for a table runner?
There isn't one single standard length, as it depends on your table size and desired overhang. A common practice is to add 10-20 inches to the length of your table to account for the overhang on both ends. This ensures the runner doesn't look too short or too long.
Can I use a table runner on a glass table?
Yes, table runners can be used on glass tables. They add color, texture, and protection to the glass surface. Consider a runner that provides a bit of grip to prevent slipping, especially if it's a very smooth glass top.
How wide should a table runner be?
The ideal width depends on your table's dimensions and how you plan to set it. A general guideline is that the runner should be wide enough to create a distinct visual band down the center of the table, typically between 10 and 16 inches. It should leave enough space for place settings on either side.
Are table runners washable?
Many table runners are washable, especially those made from cotton, linen, or durable synthetic fabrics. However, it's essential to check the care label for specific washing instructions. Some runners may require dry cleaning or spot treatment to maintain their appearance.
