How to Choose the Best Tall Drums
Portability and Space Requirements
When selecting a 'Tall Drum' instrument, users often prioritize how easily it can be moved or stored. Full electronic drum sets, such as the AODSK AED-400 or the Donner DED-80, typically require a dedicated space, though some models are designed to be foldable. In contrast, highly portable options like the AeroBand PocketDrum2 MAX offer air drum sticks and pedals that can be used almost anywhere, taking up virtually no physical space. The Donner DED-20 roll-up drum pad also presents a compact solution, easily stored when not in use, making it ideal for smaller living environments or travel.
Sound Realism and Variety
The auditory experience is a crucial factor, especially for electronic percussion. Products like the AODSK AED-400 boast 150 authentic acoustic drum sound samples, aiming for a realistic feel. The Donner DED-80 also offers over 180 sounds, providing significant versatility. For those seeking a different sonic palette, the REGIS Steel Tongue Drum delivers a unique, calming, Buddha-like resonance, distinct from traditional drum sounds. The AeroBand PocketDrum2 MAX, while convenient, offers a more limited selection of 8 tones, which might be a consideration for drummers desiring a broader sound library.
Educational Features and Connectivity
Many 'Tall Drums' are designed with learning in mind. The Donner DED-80, for instance, comes with Melodics lessons and an integrated drum coach, which can be invaluable for beginners. Similarly, the Donner DED-20 includes 40 drum lessons, directly accessible on the device. Connectivity options, such as headphone outputs, are standard across most electronic sets like the AODSK AED-400, enabling quiet practice. MIDI support, featured in the AeroBand PocketDrum2 MAX, allows for integration with music software, expanding creative and learning possibilities.
Playing Feel and Pad Construction
The tactile response of the drum pads significantly impacts the playing experience. The Donner DED-80 utilizes double-layered, high-density mesh drumheads, which are widely regarded in the industry for their realistic rebound and quiet operation. The AODSK AED-400 also features quiet drum pads, though the specific material might vary. In contrast, roll-up pads like the Donner DED-20 are typically made from soft silicone, offering a different, softer feel. Air drumming products like the AeroBand PocketDrum2 MAX provide no physical pad feedback, relying solely on motion sensors, which can be a significant adjustment for traditional drummers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Misjudging Portability Needs
A common mistake is selecting a 'Tall Drum' instrument that doesn't align with actual space or portability requirements. For instance, opting for a full electronic drum set like the AODSK AED-400 or the Donner DED-80, which, despite being foldable, still occupies a considerable footprint, might be impractical for apartment dwellers. Users needing ultimate portability and minimal space might find the AeroBand PocketDrum2 MAX or the Donner DED-20 roll-up pad to be more suitable, as they can be used and stored with greater ease.
Overlooking Sound Authenticity and Variety
Another frequent oversight involves underestimating the importance of sound quality and diversity. Drummers expecting a broad range of realistic acoustic samples might be disappointed by products with a more limited sound palette, such as the AeroBand PocketDrum2 MAX with its 8 tones. Conversely, someone seeking a traditional drum experience might purchase the REGIS Steel Tongue Drum, which, while offering a unique meditative sound, does not function as a conventional rhythmic drum set.
Ignoring Educational Tools and Connectivity
Beginners often neglect the embedded learning features and connectivity options available in modern 'Tall Drums'. Forgoing a kit with integrated lessons, like those bundled with the Donner DED-80 or the Donner DED-20, can slow down the learning process. Similarly, overlooking MIDI output, a feature present in the AeroBand PocketDrum2 MAX, limits the potential for connecting to external software for recording or advanced sound manipulation, thereby restricting the instrument's long-term utility.
