How to Choose the Best Wallpaper Borders
Understanding Wallpaper Border Types
There are several common types of wallpaper borders, each with its own advantages. Peel-and-stick borders are the easiest to apply and remove, making them ideal for renters or those who like to change their decor frequently. Traditional prepasted borders require dipping in water to activate the adhesive, offering a balance of ease and durability. Unpasted borders demand the most effort, requiring a separate wallpaper paste, but they often provide the most professional and long-lasting finish. Vinyl-coated borders are generally more durable and easier to clean than paper-only options.
Choosing the Right Design and Material
The aesthetic of your border should harmonize with your room's overall theme. Consider patterns that are timeless, such as damask or floral, or opt for more modern geometric or striped designs. For high-moisture areas like kitchens or bathrooms, choose a vinyl or scrubbable material that can withstand humidity and be wiped clean. For living rooms or bedrooms, paper-backed or fabric-backed borders can add a touch of elegance. Ensure the scale of the pattern is appropriate for the size of your room; a large pattern can overwhelm a small space, while a tiny pattern might get lost in a large room.
Preparation and Application Tips
Proper preparation is key to a successful border installation. Start by cleaning your walls thoroughly to remove any dust, grease, or old wallpaper residue. For traditional borders, ensure you have the correct type of paste recommended for your border material. Measure and cut your border strips carefully, allowing for a slight overlap at the seams. Use a smoothing tool to eliminate air bubbles and ensure good adhesion. For peel-and-stick options, work slowly and deliberately to avoid wrinkles or stretching.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between peel-and-stick and prepasted borders?
Peel-and-stick borders have an adhesive backing that is activated by removing a protective liner, making them very easy to apply and reposition. Prepasted borders require immersion in water to activate a dry adhesive, offering a more traditional application method.
Can wallpaper borders be applied over textured walls?
Applying borders over heavily textured walls can be challenging. The texture can prevent the adhesive from making full contact, leading to peeling. It's generally recommended to smooth out the wall surface or use a primer designed for textured surfaces before application.
How do I remove old wallpaper borders?
Most borders can be removed by carefully peeling them away. For stubborn adhesive, a wallpaper scorer can help perforate the surface, allowing a removal solution or warm water to penetrate and loosen the glue. Always test in an inconspicuous area first.
Are wallpaper borders suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?
Yes, especially vinyl or scrubbable borders. These materials are more resistant to moisture and grease, and they can be easily wiped clean, making them practical for high-traffic or humid areas.
How much border do I need for a room?
Measure the total perimeter of the room where you plan to install the border. It's wise to purchase an extra roll or at least an extra few feet to account for pattern matching, mistakes, or future repairs.
