A snatch block works by creating a mechanical advantage. When the winch cable is routed through the snatch block and anchored back to the vehicle or a secure point, it effectively creates a 2:1 pulling ratio, distributing the load and halving the force required from the winch. This allows a winch to pull heavier loads than its rated capacity alone.

Single-line operation uses the hoist's cable directly, offering full lifting height but at the hoist's base capacity. Dual-line operation, typically achieved by using a sheaved pulley hook, doubles the hoist's lifting capacity by distributing the load across two lines, but it halves the effective lifting height. This provides flexibility for different load requirements.

The lifting ratio indicates the mechanical advantage provided by the pulley system. A 5:1 ratio means you only need to exert one-fifth of the load's weight to lift it, while an 8:1 ratio reduces the effort to one-eighth. A higher ratio makes lifting heavy objects significantly easier but requires pulling a greater length of rope to achieve the desired vertical lift.

Regular maintenance for electric hoists typically involves inspecting the steel wire for kinks, frays, or corrosion, checking the hook and safety latches for damage, and ensuring all mounting hardware is secure. Lubrication of moving parts, as per the manufacturer's guidelines, is also essential. Routine checks of the remote control and emergency stop function are also recommended.

While these systems are designed for heavy lifting, their suitability for vehicle recovery depends on the specific situation and the system's capacity. They can be effective for lighter recovery tasks or repositioning vehicles, especially due to their portability. However, for complex or high-stress recoveries, a dedicated vehicle recovery winch or specialized equipment is often more appropriate due to dynamic loads and safety considerations.
