How to Choose the Best Acrylic Painting
Understanding Acrylic Paint Types
Acrylic paints are available in different grades, primarily student-grade and artist-grade. Student-grade paints are more affordable and suitable for beginners or practice. They typically contain less pigment and may have more fillers. Artist-grade paints offer higher pigment concentration, better lightfastness, and smoother consistency, ideal for professional work or serious hobbyists.
Key Features to Consider
When choosing acrylics, look at pigment quality and concentration. Higher pigment load means more intense, true colors. Lightfastness is crucial for longevity; pigments rated highly will resist fading over time when exposed to light. Consider the paint's consistency, which can range from fluid to heavy body. Heavy body paints are thicker, ideal for impasto techniques, while fluid paints are thinner and suitable for washes or detail work.
What to Look for in a Set
Acrylic sets vary in the number of colors and the quality of pigments. A starter set might include basic primary colors, black, and white. Larger sets offer a broader palette, allowing for more color mixing possibilities. For beginners, a set with a good range of colors and decent pigment quality is a great starting point. Experienced artists might prefer to purchase individual tubes of artist-grade paints for specific hues and qualities.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between student and artist grade acrylics?
Student-grade acrylics are more budget-friendly and contain fewer pigments, often mixed with extenders. Artist-grade acrylics have a higher pigment concentration for richer color and better lightfastness, making them more suitable for professional use.
How important is lightfastness in acrylic paints?
Lightfastness is very important as it indicates how well the paint resists fading when exposed to light over time. High lightfastness ensures your artwork will retain its original colors for years to come.
What does 'heavy body' mean for acrylic paint?
Heavy body acrylics have a thick, buttery consistency similar to oil paints. This makes them excellent for techniques like impasto, where you want to build texture and retain brushstrokes.
Can I mix different brands of acrylic paint?
Generally, yes, you can mix acrylic paints from different brands. Most acrylics are formulated with similar binders, allowing them to be blended together without issues.
What are the essential colors to start with?
A good starting palette includes titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, and phthalo blue. These primary and secondary colors allow for a wide range of color mixing.
