How to Choose the Best Kids’ Drawing & Painting Supplies
Consider the Age and Skill Level
Supplies should align with a child's developmental stage. For toddlers, look for chunky crayons, washable markers, and large, easy-to-grip brushes. Older children or those with more experience might benefit from finer-tipped markers, a wider range of colored pencils, and more sophisticated paint sets.
Prioritize Safety and Washability
Non-toxic formulations are paramount for children's art supplies. Check labels for certifications like AP (Approved Product) from the Art & Creative Materials Institute. Washable paints and markers are a parent's best friend, making cleanup significantly easier after creative sessions.
Variety and Medium Exploration
Drawing Tools: Offer a mix of crayons, colored pencils, washable markers, and perhaps even pastels.
Painting Supplies: Consider tempera paints for vibrant colors, watercolors for subtle washes, and acrylics for more permanent results (with adult supervision). Ensure brushes come in various sizes and shapes.
Paper: Thick drawing paper or watercolor paper is ideal to prevent paints from bleeding through.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the safest art supplies for young children?
Look for supplies labeled 'non-toxic' and ideally certified by organizations like the Art & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) with an AP seal. Chunky crayons, washable markers, and tempera paints are generally good choices for toddlers and preschoolers.
How important is washability for kids' art supplies?
Washability is extremely important, especially for younger children who are still developing fine motor control. Washable paints and markers can save parents a lot of time and effort when it comes to cleaning up clothes, furniture, and hands.
Should I buy different supplies for different age groups?
Yes, it's beneficial to tailor supplies to a child's age and abilities. Younger children benefit from larger, easier-to-handle tools, while older children can handle more detailed supplies like finer-tipped markers or a wider range of art media.
What type of paper is best for kids' painting?
For most kids' painting, a thicker paper is recommended to prevent paint from soaking through. Medium-weight drawing paper is suitable for tempera or acrylic paints, while slightly heavier watercolor paper works best for watercolors.
