How to Choose the Best Artists Drawing Sets
Consider Your Skill Level
For beginners, a comprehensive set with a variety of pencils (graphite, charcoal, colored), erasers, and sharpeners is ideal. Intermediate and advanced artists might seek sets with specialized tools like blending stumps, tortillons, or specific hardness grades of graphite for detailed work.
Material Quality and Variety
Pencils: Look for a range of graphite hardness (e.g., HB, 2B, 4B) for sketching and shading, and consider sets with colored pencils or charcoal for different effects.
Paper/Sketchpad: While not always included, some sets come with basic sketchpads. Ensure the paper weight is suitable for the mediums you intend to use.
Accessories: Essential accessories include good quality erasers (kneaded and standard), sharpeners, and possibly blending tools.
Intended Use
Are you primarily interested in sketching, portraiture, illustration, or perhaps mixed media? Different sets cater to specific artistic disciplines. For instance, a set geared towards realistic portraiture might emphasize graphite and charcoal, while a set for illustration could include a broader range of colored pencils.
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of pencils are typically found in drawing sets?
Drawing sets commonly include graphite pencils in various hardness grades (e.g., H for hard lines, B for softer, darker lines), charcoal pencils for rich blacks and blending, and often colored pencils for adding hues to your work.
Are drawing sets suitable for beginners?
Yes, many drawing sets are specifically curated for beginners, offering a good variety of essential tools to experiment with different techniques without overwhelming the user. They provide a cost-effective way to start drawing.
What accessories are important in a drawing set?
Key accessories include erasers (kneaded erasers are great for lifting graphite and charcoal without damaging the paper) and pencil sharpeners. Blending tools like stumps or tortillons can also be very useful for shading.
Can I use these drawing sets for digital art?
These drawing sets are designed for traditional art mediums on paper. They do not have direct compatibility with digital art software or devices. However, you can use drawings created with these sets as inspiration or reference for your digital projects.
