How to Choose the Best TV Sketch Comedies
Choosing Your Sketchbook
When selecting a sketchbook for your comedy writing and brainstorming, consider these key factors:
Paper Quality and Weight: Opt for paper that can handle a variety of media, from pencils and pens to light markers, without bleeding through. A heavier weight (e.g., 80-100 gsm) is generally preferable for durability and to prevent ghosting.
Size and Portability: Think about where you'll be doing most of your sketching. Smaller, pocket-sized sketchbooks are great for on-the-go ideas, while larger formats offer more space for detailed storyboarding or mind-mapping.
Binding Type: Spiral-bound sketchbooks lay flat easily, which is convenient for writing and drawing. Hardcover sketchbooks offer more protection for your work and can serve as a sturdy surface when you don't have a table.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best type of paper for jotting down quick comedy ideas?
For quick ideas, smooth paper that accepts pencil and pen well is ideal. Avoid overly textured paper that can slow down your writing. Ensure the paper weight is sufficient to prevent ink from bleeding through to the next page.
Should I choose a spiral-bound or a stitched sketchbook?
Spiral-bound sketchbooks offer the convenience of laying completely flat, which is excellent for writing and drawing side-by-side. Stitched or bound sketchbooks often have a more premium feel and better durability, though they may not lie as flat initially.
How important is the size of the sketchbook for comedy writing?
The size depends on your workflow. A compact sketchbook is perfect for capturing spontaneous thoughts during commutes or meetings. A larger sketchbook provides ample room for developing longer bits, character sketches, or visual gags.
Can I use markers in a standard sketchbook?
Standard sketchbooks often use paper that is not designed for markers, which can lead to significant bleed-through. If you plan to use markers, look for sketchbooks specifically labeled as 'marker-friendly' or those with a higher paper weight and a smoother finish.
