Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 'bloom' on Concord grapes?
The bloom is a natural, powdery white coating that appears on the skin of many fruits, including grapes. It acts as a protective barrier against moisture loss and disease. Its presence is generally an indicator of freshness and careful handling.
How can I tell if Concord grapes are ripe?
Ripe Concord grapes will be deeply colored, plump, and have a sweet aroma. They should detach easily from the stem. If they are still firm and somewhat tart, they may need a few more days to reach peak sweetness.
Can I freeze fresh Concord grapes?
Yes, fresh Concord grapes can be frozen. Wash and thoroughly dry them before freezing. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze individually, then transfer them to a freezer bag or container. Frozen grapes are great for smoothies or as a frozen treat.
Why do some Concord grapes have seeds?
Concord grapes are a seeded variety. The seeds are edible, though many people prefer to spit them out. Seedless grape varieties are also available if you prefer to avoid them altogether.
How should I wash Concord grapes before eating?
It's best to wash Concord grapes just before you plan to eat or use them. Rinse them under cool running water and gently rub away any visible dirt. You can also use a colander for easier rinsing.
